This approach allows participants to become totally immersed in the study of a single research topic, which they explore from several perspectives--scientific, historical, technological and literary. In this context, participants come to appreciate the connections between subjects that are often taught only in unrelated courses, thus achieving the goals of a liberal arts education. In turn, the participants begin to experience the excitement of discovery and to see the research topic as an important part of a larger, more complex integrated system.
