Instrumental and vocal groups contribute to the social and cultural life of the campus community at USF. Ensembles rehearse in the Jeschke Fine Arts Center and perform at a number of venues both on campus and within the greater Sioux Falls area. Membership in musical ensembles is open to all members of the USF community.
In addition to the ensembles featured below, chamber groups and other ad hoc ensembles may
be organized based on student interest.
Wind Ensemble (MUS 160)
The Wind Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of wind and percussion music from a variety of nations, eras, and genres. The Wind Ensemble's repertoire reflects the diversity of the American wind band by performing a broad repertoire including symphonic transcriptions, hymn and folksong settings, marches, chamber music, and original works for wind ensemble, incorporating a wide literature of works from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Membership is open to all members of the student body. Selection is by audition.
Jazz Ensemble (MUS 165)
The Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of jazz and other American vernacular music. The Jazz Ensemble's repertoire reflects the wide scope of American popular music, covering works in a variety of styles, by a variety of composers. Students are encouraged to explore music-making both as soloists and as ensemble members, with a focus on the skills of traditional jazz improvisation. Membership is open to all members of the student body. Selection is by audition.
Chamber Orchestra (MUS 169)
The Chamber Orchestra provides opportunities for string and wind players to perform in a variety of small-group formats. Students may participate in both chamber groups (duos, trios, etc.) and a full chamber orchestra. Membership is open to all members of the student body. Selection is by audition.
Cougar Pep Band (extra-curricular)
Help to create excitement at USF athletic events! The new Cougar Pep Band debuted this spring at men's and women's basketball games, and the group is making plans to amp up the atmosphere at football games this fall. Membership is open to all members of the student body, and a limited number of Cougar Band scholarships are available by audition.
Concert Chorale (MUS 163)
The Concert Chorale's repertoire includes sacred and secular music composed throughout history for large mixed chorus. Membership is open to all members of the student body. Selection is by audition.
Singing Camerata (MUS 164)
This group is a select ensemble of 8 to 20 members. Singers present the best literature from all eras throughout history appropriate to a small performing group. The group performs musical styles such as contemporary sacred and secular, gospel, vocal jazz, as well as 15th and 16th century Madrigals. Membership is open to all members of the Concert Chorale. Selection is by audition.
Cantare (MUS 167)
Cantare's repertoire includes sacred and secular music. Membership is open to all interested students, faculty, and staff, with emphasis placed on incoming students. No audition is necessary to participate.
