Mission

Welcome to the English department at the University of Sioux Falls.

We offer instruction in language and literature from a Christian perspective and promote the spirit of a Christian liberal education by fostering creative, independent thinkers.  We say "a Christian perspective" instead of "the Christian perspective" because we celebrate the diversity among our faculty in its commitment to integrate faith and learning.

The English faculty are responsible for three general education courses: Western Heritages I and II, and Introduction to Literature.  The Western Heritages courses--casually referred to as LAR 111 and LAR 112--comprise a two-semester sequence taken by nearly all freshmen.  In LAR, students become familiar with some of the important ideas and texts that have shaped the West; they engage in various kinds of writing; and they engage in discussion about the meaning of the liberal arts, the Christian liberal arts, and the liberally educated person.  In Introduction to Literature (ENG 200), students read, discuss, write about, and in some cases perform various kinds of literature, including drama, poetry, fiction, and non-fictional prose.

And, of course, we offer a number of courses for the English major, including three different "tracks" that an English major may pursue: the literature track, the writing track, and teaching certification in secondary English education.  We also offer special topics courses.  Some of the most recent examples include courses Tolkien, fairy tales, mystery fiction, classical mythology, and environmental literature.

The English faculty are committed to the intellectual and spiritual harmony of each English major.   Each major is assigned a faculty advisor who works closely with the student.  Moreover, our student-to-teacher ratios in upper-level English courses are typically 12 to 1, so students get plenty of one-on-one attention and plenty of opportunity to engage in discussion.  We publish an annual student literary magazine, Asaph's Cow, we have a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, (the International English Honors Society), and we offer a number of awards for outstanding academic achievement and creative writing.

We'd like to talk with you.  You can call us at 605.331.6718 or email one of our English faculty.
