Where in the
world are Social Work Majors?
The University of Sioux Falls Social Work Program faculty
encourages students to consider at least one off-campus
experience during their student days. There are many opportunities
available through the University or many other schools
with whom agreements can be arranged.
The self-awareness and growth that occurs
for social work students when visiting new places and
meeting new people is impossible to measure. Working with
persons who are different from them is likely to be the
social worker’s regular experience. Becoming comfortable
when meeting new and interesting people is a valuable
outcome for the social work students who experience learning
in new environments.
January Interim
Students often use the January Interim (a four-week session
when students register for only one course) to travel
to other countries or to participate in academic and service/mission
trips around the region. Opportunities exist for students
to travel almost any where in the world to learn about
people and their culture. In the past few years, social
work students have studied in Egypt, Northern Ireland,
Chicago, Poland, Germany, as well as touring Europe with
musical groups from the University of Sioux Falls.
Introduction to the City (SWK
273 - every January Interim)
Many University of Sioux Falls social work students register
for the Introduction to the City course during the January
Interim. (Check the web site for pictures) It is co-taught
between a sociologist and a social worker which expands
the opportunities available. The course is an introduction
to urban sociology and urban ministry. Students visit
various urban ministries and social agencies, and are
introduced to neighborhood analysis. Each student develops
an individual project exploring some aspect of urban life
or ministry. The experiences of this course fulfill the
cross-cultural requirements for general education. (There’s
also time for fun activities—sightseeing, theater and
shopping, for example.)
Interim 2010 - Social Workers to Ecuador
Students will gain a first-hand experience of Ecuadorian culture and life. Each student will live with a family in the community and learn about social work from a global perspective.
Semester-Long Experiences
Social Work Semester in Mexico (Spring semester every
year in Cuernavaca Mexico) Most recently, the University
of Sioux Falls Social Work Program faculty have developed
a unique Social Work Semester in Mexico with several colleges
and universities in the region. Cuernavaca Mexico is the
site of the spring semester experience full of varied
observations and opportunities for interaction.
The experience is designed for sophomore,
junior or senior students. Students from the University
of Sioux Falls will be given preference because of the
involvement of the faculty in developing this experience.
Check the web site which describes this experience and
plan ahead!! The sequence of University of Sioux Falls
courses offers this exciting chance to learn about Mexico,
it’s people, history and culture.

of the many semester programs offered by them in Washington,

Xiemen China, Costa Rica, Oxford England, Los Angeles

Social Work Practicum
Abroad
Social Work programs across the nation are developing
opportunities for students to complete their senior practicum
in other countries while still fulfilling the requirements
of the Council on Social Work Education accreditation
standards. A University of Sioux Falls student recently
completed her senior practicum in England at a school
for youth-at-risk. A university in Australia has recently
issued a special invitation to students from the United
States to spend a semester completing comparable courses
at their university. Colleges and universities in other
countries are increasingly showing interest in students
from the United States. Check it out!!
Summer Jobs in
England
There is a shortage of health care professionals throughout
England for persons with a DipSW, BSW or MSW. Summer and
full time positions are available in agencies serving
children and families, older persons, offending youth,
mental health, asylum, adoption and foster care. Check
the website for London Qulified Social Workers, a specialist
staffing agency specializing in the placement of social
workers throughout the United Kingdom.

The
belief that God will do everything for man is as untenable
as the belief that man can do everything for himself.
It too, is based on a lack of faith.
We must learn that to expect God to do everything while
we do nothing is not faith, but superstition.
