Rebecca Schultz, Associate Professor of Exercise Science, has taught at the University of Sioux Falls since 2001. Since 2008, half of her time has been serving as the Project Director for the Title III grant. Rebecca received her BS in Athletic Training from the University of North Dakota in 1994, her MS in Exercise Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1996, and her PhD in Biological Sciences in 2007. Prior to teaching, Rebecca worked in cardiac rehabilitation. She is an ACSM certified Clinical Exercise Specialist® and a certified and licensed Athletic Trainer. Rebecca’s interests lie in clinical exercise physiology, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular physiology, obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity. Rebecca and her husband Todd have three children. In her free time, Rebecca enjoys spending time with family and friends, swimming, and cycling.
Barbara Vellenga, director of the School of Nursing, USF has had 30 years of experience in nursing education. She received a BA degree in nursing from Jamestown College, Jamestown North Dakota; her MS degree from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in Psychiatric Nursing; and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas, Austin, with an emphasis in research and clinical psychiatric nursing.
Barbara’s clinical work includes Intensive Care nursing with the majority of her clinical work and research in psychiatric nursing. She also developed three baccalaureate nursing programs and a graduate nursing program at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Barbara and her husband Don are the parents of 4 adult children, and relocated to Sioux Falls in February 2009. Barbara is an avid reader, enjoys traveling, playing the piano, connecting with family and friends, and is a major movie buff!
Cheri Kovalenko received a BSN from the Ohio State University in 1997 and an MS from Ohio State in 2001. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has practiced in both primary care and inpatient/critical care areas, caring for patients across all age groups. Particular interest areas are pediatrics, pediatric sedation, and critical care. Cheri is enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of Minnesota in. Cheri has lived in the Sioux Falls area for the past 7 years with her husband, Lyle, and their four children. She enjoys reading, playing piano, running, and camping in her spare time.
Andrea Rasmussen received a BA in Nursing from Augustana College in 1997 and her MS from South Dakota State University in 2010. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Areas of past nursing practice include: oncology, women’s health, and newborn care. She has focused the past few years in perinatal and family education in the outpatient and inpatient settings. She also is President of South Dakota Babies, Inc., a privately run community-based business that provides parenting education. Andrea is in the process of applying to the PhD in Nursing program through South Dakota State University with plans to begin this program in the Fall of 2011. Andrea is a Sioux Falls, SD, native and enjoys spending time with her husband, Marc, and their two children.
