History in the Making
The story behind the ringAuthor: Stephanie Swenson
It’s that time of year again! Time to watch your roommates and friends suddenly shed their homework in exchange for golf clubs, kayaks and swim caps. Nothing brings out the inner competitor in students like the USF Olympics. So before the 2011 Summer Games conclude, the Vessel has decided to take a look back at USF’s Summer Olympic history. The Summer Olympics began in the fall of 2008, the summer after the Beijing Olympics.  Rebekah Merriman, the previous Sullivan Resident Director, and Alex Heinert decided that our campus should not just be limited to winter sports. And thus, the Summer Olympics were born. Each year, at least one new event has been added. Kayaking and basketball have been added in recent years. This year, monster golf will be making its debut appearance. So what are our readers’ favorite memories of past Summer Olympics?

Alex Heinert answered, “It’s probably a toss-up between the year Matt Rieck fell down while biking and all the Burgess guys picked him up and carried him around and the time Dennis Thum and Karen Sumner won the decathlon.”
“I think my favorite moment was performing ‘Can’t Touch This’ for rhythmic gymnastics,” added Brigitte Gross, a junior and two-time gold medalist.

Davee Johnson replied, “I really enjoyed watching Burgess’ synchronized swimming routine last year. It will be hard to beat the hilarity of the guys in their swimsuits and caps.”
The Summer Olympics conclude this week with archery, kayaking, track and field, and soccer on Thursday night.

On Friday night, basketball and rhythmic gymnastics will take place at the Stewart Center at 8pm.

The Olympics conclude with pairs beach volleyball at 3pm on Saturday.
So who will be voted Most Valuable Player this year? With the graduation of several past MVPs, such as Dan Terveen and Heather Grause, is there a chance for a new winner to arise?

Will another country be able to steal away a victory from the hosting country of Ukraine? It’s all up in the air until the Closing Ceremonies Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Java City.
Fun fact: Dennis Thum is the oldest competitor to compete in the Summer Olympics.
