For all those students that were too bogged down with homework, practices or rehearsals, and USF alumni, here is your USF Homecoming Week Recap.
The week got off to a fantastic start when the USF campus elected Matt Rieck and Staci Spilde as their Homecoming King and Queen. Who wouldn’t vote for the kid who can carry a backpack three times his weight?
Tuesday, dozens of students headed over to West Mall 7 to catch a free showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as well represented as during Harry Potter week, but this was rumored to be because of the large number of students who were attending the dress rehearsal for “Broadway and Beyond.”
Wednesday brought the premiere of “Broadway and Beyond” where an audience found themselves wowed by an ensemble that included Dennis Thum, Karen Sumner impressions, cheerleaders, football players, backflips and Colin Koth in a skirt. Who would want to miss all that?
Wednesday also brought the Powderpuff football game where the upperclassmen take on the underclassmen. The upperclassmen took an early lead and had a score of 21-0 at halftime. But the underclassmen quickly rallied, and were able to score in the second half. However, their valiant effort proved fruitless as the upperclassmen were determined to keep their 21 point lead, and made the final score 28-7.
Thursday, USF tried out a new homecoming activity: the scavenger hunt! The Dream Team of Nathan Schlatter, Courtney Ballard, Laura Anderson, Emily Sazama, Tina Spade, Kyle Simons and Lily Gullickson won with an impressive 512 points.
Friday, USF celebrated its annual Cougar Ride. Costumed students took to the cougar dressed up as crayons, Pepto-Bismol, and even each other. A couple of ninja turtles were even seen lurking in the grass around the cougar.
Saturday brought out all kinds of competitors! First, runners competed in the Community 5K. USF made quite the showing as well, boasting Karen Sumner, Ashley Maturan, Leslie Gorby, Maggie and Ben Nebelsick, Tina Spade, Debbie Jones, Katelynn Peterson, Lindsay Benedetto, and Coach Ehrisman. That afternoon, our USF football team took on the SD School of Mines in a very “close” game of 71-0. Spectators were rewarded at the conclusion of the game by a 10-minute show of fireworks courtesy of Student Senate.
Finally, Saturday night brought out all kinds of costumed students. Winning costumes included a Furby, the Cereal gang, Rock, Paper, and Scissors and the cast of Peter Pan. Personal favorites were the Pacman gang, TMNT, Power Rangers and the Spice Girls. Don’t worry; no fire alarms were set off this time!
