And from what I can tell, this festival was originally held in honor of the dead and celebrated the autumn’s harvest and end of the Celtic year. Versions of Halloween supposedly came to America with Irish immigrants as a result of Ireland’s Great Famine of 1840. To acknowledge the spirits passing through, food was left on doorsteps for the souls of ancestors, while people wore masks and set out frightening displays to ward off harmful, evil spirits.
