USF has come far since 1883 and continues to remain faithful to the vision of its founders. The University affirms its heritage as a distinctively Christian college in the liberal arts tradition, fostering academic excellence and preparing students to serve God and humankind in the world.

For 135 years, the University of Sioux Falls remains true to its mission.

Twenty-three presidents have led the University of Sioux Falls in its 135-year history. Dr. Brett Bradfield, inaugurated on September 7, 2017, as USF’s 23rd president, continues to lead the University with a commitment to higher education, academic excellence and engagement of students of all backgrounds. With solid enrollment numbers this fall and a 98 percent job placement rate, the future of USF is bright.

Events

USF's 135-year Anniversary Celebration Picnic was held on September 13, 2018, at 5 p.m. on the USF Quad.

Traditions

Chapel

Our Christian mission is a vibrant thread that pulls us together as a community. USF faculty and staff fellowship together at chapel every Tuesday at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

Convocation

Formal beginning of the school year where students and faculty gather in the Jeschke Fine Arts Center. Faculty put on their academic regalia and process into the auditorium. Convocation is the start of students' academic journey at USF.

Cougar Days (Homecoming)

A week filled with activities where alumni and current students celebrate their “home.”

Late Night Breakfast

The night leading up to finals, USF professors and staff gather in Salsbury Dining Hall and serve students a delicious breakfast.

Madrigal Dinners

The Madrigal Dinners are an annual series of Renaissance-themed Christmas dinner theatre performances presented by the Singing Camerata (known during the holiday season as The Madrigal Singers). Established in 1963 by Lois Harchanko, Music Professor Emeritus, the Madrigal Dinners represent one of USF's longest-standing and strongest traditions. The performances combine vocal and instrumental music, dancing, drama, elegant Renaissance garb and fine dining.

Spirit of Excellence Awards Celebration

A celebration that takes place at the end of the academic year and recognizes students and faculty for their devotion to scholarship and contribution to service. Prestigious awards such as the Purple Feather, Thomas F. Johnson Distinguished Service Award, Representative Man and Woman and Outstanding Faculty Awards are staples of the ceremony.

Towels at Graduation

The mission of the University of Sioux Falls is expressed in the motto Culture for Service. At graduation, each graduate receives a towel as they receive their diploma. The towel, a symbol of service, is a gift from Campus Ministries. It serves as a reminder to the graduates that with an education comes a commission to serve.
