USF Theatre Production: Life is a Dream

First published around 1636, Life is a Dream is a supreme example of Spanish Golden Age drama. It is a play full of secrets, with many of the characters having closer ties to each other than they realize. The fictional story focuses on Segismundo, Prince of Poland, who was imprisoned by his father, King Basilio, after hearing a dire prophecy that the Prince would bring disaster to the country and death to the King. Many years later, as he contemplates who will succeed him, the King grants Segismundo freedom from the shackled existence he has always known for a chance to prove the prophecy wrong. This classic remains on of Calderón’s best known and most studied works.
