April 14, 2016
This spring, USF business students helped the Sioux Falls Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) complete over 330 tax returns. The volunteers assisted in the taxpayers getting $185,121 of Earned Income Credit and total refunds of $437,281.
According to Associate Professor of Accounting Jill Whitley, a total of 27 volunteers assisted the program this year including community members and students from USF, Augustana University, Southeast Tech and Lake Area Tech. Whitley has participated in the program alongside USF students since 1999.
VITA is an IRS sponsored tax assistance program for low income, elderly, disabled and non-English or limited English speaking taxpayers. Volunteers provide free tax assistance, tax return preparation and electronic filing of tax returns at Siouxland Library in Sioux Falls each spring.
