David L. DeHoogh-Kliewer, D.M.A.

Professor, Music / Director of Choral Activities / Chair of Visual & Performing Arts

Dr. David DeHoogh-Kliewer, a 2014-2015 recipient of the University of Sioux Falls Outstanding Faculty Award and the 2015 Encore Award for the American Choral Directors Association - South Dakota chapter, is Professor of Music and serves as the fourth tenured Director of Choral Activities since 1932. He teaches courses in conducting, music theory, music education and conducts the Concert Chorale, the Singing Camerata chamber singers, the Collegiate Choir and the University Singers contemporary a cappella ensemble. He also serves as Area Chair for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts with an emphasis in Choral Conducting at the University of Kansas where he studied with Dr. Paul Tucker, a Master of Arts in Vocal Music Education from the University of South Dakota (Professor Larry Torkelson) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Education from Bethel College in N. Newton, Kansas (Dr. Marles Preheim).

Under Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer's direction, the University of Sioux Falls Concert Chorale has enjoyed touring and serving throughout the United States and Europe, including recent performances at Notre Dame in Paris, Venice's St. Mark's Basilica, various venues in Belgium and the Netherlands and a special performance for the Pope in Vatican City. Under his direction, the Singing Camerata chamber singers continue the strong tradition of celebrating the annual Madrigal Dinners every December, just as they have since 1963.

An important element of Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer's choral tour itineraries is service. In alignment with the University's motto of Culture for Service, members of the choirs have served at the Earthworks Community Farm in Los Angeles, Share Your Soles in Chicago, Open Door Mission in Omaha, Habitat for Humanity and Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, the Surfrider Foundation in San Diego, performed for children at the Colorado Children's Hospital and have served various orphanages, homeless shelters, the South Dakota Penitentiary, children's hospitals and retirement centers regionally, nationally and in Europe.

Prior to joining the USF faculty in 2006, Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer taught in elementary through senior high settings for eleven years, leading high school choir tours to Washington, D.C., New York City, Denver and San Francisco. His choirs have received state, regional and national invitations and have performed at various music conventions.

Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer started his teaching career in Loveland, Colo., teaching all levels. He has served as a guest clinician and adjudicator for various musical events and contests and enjoys conducting choral festivals for all ages. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), serving as the South Dakota chairperson for College and University Choirs. He has served on various boards including the Singing Boys of Sioux Falls, the South Dakota Bach Society, the Sioux Falls Children's Choir and as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church, Sioux Falls. At USF, he facilitates the collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and performs locally as a baritone soloist and with Transept, a vocal ensemble of elite professional consort singers and select local musicians based in Sioux Falls conducted by Dr. Timothy Campbell. Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer conducts the adult choir at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls just as choral professors from USF have done during the last century. He is married to Michelle, a counselor at USF, and they have two daughters, Hannah and Emma.
