Carla Diede

Assistant Professor, Education

Carla Diede began teaching middle school mathematics in 2007 for LWC Middle School in Lennox, SD. She taught seventh grade math, eighth grade math, and Algebra at LWC Middle School for six years, and strived to meet individual student needs by developing materials to create optimal learning environments including the use of flipped instruction. During that time, Carla earned a M.S. degree in Education with a Specialization in Teaching, Learning and Leadership in 2011 from Southwest Minnesota State University. In 2013, Carla began teaching middle school math at Harrisburg South Middle School, and served as the eighth grade team leader. She taught a variety of courses while in the classroom including sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math, Algebra, Geometry, Design Thinking and Idea Foundry. In 2016, Carla began serving as a Personalized Learning Coach to support teachers who were implementing personalized learning at the middle school level, while continuing to teach in the classroom herself. In 2019, she was asked to work as a Personalized Learning Coach full time for the Harrisburg School District to continue to support the growth of personalized learning at the middle school level. Once personalized learning had been implemented at all three grade levels in both middle schools, Carla transitioned to the role of a 6-12 Instruction Coach in 2021. As an Instructional Coach, she supported all secondary teachers through a variety of tasks including mentoring first and second year teachers, developing professional development, and helping onboard teachers new to the district. In 2023, Carla accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Fredrikson School of Education at the University of Sioux Falls. In addition to teaching education courses, she serves as the Director of Field Experiences and oversees all teacher residents. Outside of the university, Carla volunteers as a VexIQ Robotics Coach and as a Church Youth Group leader.
