USF bringing flexibility, online options to adult learners

The University of Sioux Falls is now offering new online programming options geared towards adult learners, with the addition of an LPN to BSN degree and an online version of USF’s well-respected elementary education degree.
The LPN to BSN degree is designed for current licensed practical nurses (LPNs) who want to complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. This degree completion program gives students the tools needed to be competent, compassionate nurses while offering the flexibility of online coursework paired with in-person clinical experiences, all within the vibrant healthcare hub of Sioux Falls. The program serves to accommodate the working adult student while providing support on the journey to becoming a BSN-prepared nurse.
“The LPN to BSN program track is another way that the University is responding to the needs of our community,” said Jessica Cherenegar, director of USF School of Nursing. “The acuity and complexity of the patient populations that nurses are caring for is unprecedented. The need for BSN-prepared nurses is a direct response to these advanced levels of care. Establishing a new way for a student to reach the goal of earning their BSN is exciting and our dedicated faculty and support staff at USF are here to guide students every step of the way.”
USF’s online elementary education program offers the same academic rigor as the on-campus experience but with added flexibility for students balancing work, family and other commitments. The online coursework can be completed at the student’s own pace through mostly 7-week classes while still engaging with faculty and peers in meaningful ways. Practicum and student teaching experiences can be arranged in the student’s preferred city or school. The program can be completed in as little as three years, sometimes quicker with transferable credits, helping students start their teaching careers sooner. Students are also able to complete a double major in elementary education and special education in four years or less.
“Based on the flexibility of the program, we will be able to meet the needs of even more future educators, in a time when our communities and schools greatly need them,” said Brooke Murphy, associate professor of education. “In this online modality, experiences with students will continue to be an integral part of the program, and courses will be taught by current PK-12 educators or USF faculty with prior teaching experience, who remain regularly involved with the PK-12 classrooms. Students will graduate the program ready to lead their own classrooms and make a positive impact in the lives of young learners.”
Fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the online elementary education program delivers a high-quality education that prepares students for state licensure and success in diverse classroom settings. USF is the only private school in South Dakota accredited by CAEP.
“USF places extreme value on its effort to continue to support workforce development in the Sioux Falls community. These programs provide the opportunity to meet students where they are, while also providing them a high quality education that will serve them in their careers and lives in the years to come,” said Dr. Brett Bradfield, USF president.
The LPN to BSN program started its first classes this past academic year and is currently enrolling for fall 2025. The online elementary education program is enrolling for fall 2025 as well.
