Faithful to USF’s mission of serving God and humankind in the world, the University has a long-standing tradition of encouraging students to integrate service into their everyday lives. To exemplify this spirit of service, USF devotes one day during the academic year—dubbed ‘Culture for Service Day’—to serving in the community. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 24.

"Culture for Service Day allows us to get out into the community, serve and make connections in so many different ways," said Tylee Groenhoff, senior elementary education major and resident assistant. “I’ve gotten to volunteer at two different schools previously, and the teachers and students are always so excited to have us there to spend quality time.”

On September 24, nearly 450 faculty, staff and students will serve the Sioux Falls community in partnership with over 20 local organizations including:

  • 18th Street Church
  • Anne Sullivan Elementary School
  • Bishop Dudley - Center for Families
  • Butterfly House & Aquarium
  • Connection Church
  • Compassion Childcare
  • DakotAbilities
  • Faith Temple Food Giveaway
  • First Baptist Sioux Falls
  • First United Methodist Church
  • Good News Church
  • Good NAtured
  • Lake Lorraine
  • LifeScape
  • Memorial Middle School
  • Premiere Playhouse
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota
  • Southern Hills United Methodist Church
  • St. Francis House
  • The Banquet
  • The Point is to Serve
  • Tre Ministries
  • Whittier Residents Association

“Living out the motto of Culture for Service is something that we strive for every day at USF, and Culture for Service Day is just the one day out of the year that we formally call the most attention to it,” said Devin Wolthuizen, assistant director of student life. “We recognize the ways in which the Sioux Falls community supports the University and our students, and this is such a meaningful day that we can set aside to say thank you by giving back a bit of our time.”
