USF announces launch of Esports, set to begin competition in fall 2026
The University of Sioux Falls is proud to announce the addition of Esports, with competitive play scheduled to begin in fall of 2026. Esports is one of the fastest growing sports on college campuses, and USF will compete as a coed team, providing new avenues for student engagement, recruitment and scholarship opportunities.
USF is investing in state-of-the-art gaming equipment and a new gaming arena on campus, which will serve as the hub for training, competition and content creation. League affiliation will be announced soon.
"Collegiate Esports represents a powerful intersection of student opportunity, technology and community," said USF President Brett Bradfield. "By introducing this program, we are opening doors for students who may not have participated in sports or activities otherwise, allowing them to represent USF with pride in a widely recognized, highly competitive sector.”
The inaugural season will feature competitive teams in popular titles such as League of Legends, Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2, Rocket League and Valorant, with opportunities to expand based on student interest.
Libby Franken has been hired as USF’s first Esports coach. She most recently was captain at Buena Vista University and brings 4 years of playing experience at the collegiate level to the USF Esports program. Franken was named the NECC Esports Grand Finals Champion in December of 2023. As captain at Buena Vista University, Franken assisted in coaching and mentoring her team.
“Although competitive, Esports at USF will foster a supportive environment focused on teamwork, strategic thinking and academic success. Every match and practice presents an opportunity for growth, both in skill and character," said Franken.
